It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red field.

Shield Argent a pilgrim´s staff Azure with annexed canteen Gules fixed of the same, flanked by two potatoe shrubs Vert fruited Gules, issuant from base a double mount Vert. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "VILA FRANCA DO DEÃO".
Meaning:
Staff and canteen are attributes of St. James the Elder, the local patron saint.

Vila Franca do Deão is one of the 35 communes of Guarda Municipality not affected by the 2013 changes; it had 134 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 12,99 km².
