It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of blue and white.

Shield Argent with base wavy of Azure and Argent, two millstones Gules set in fess, in chief a cogwheel Gules. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "BRITO - GUIMARÃES".
Meaning:
The base wavy is representing the local riches of water, especially Ave River. The cogwheel is representing industries. The millstones are representing the local production of corn flower, run by water power.
