It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain blue field.

Shield Argent with base wavy of Vert and Argent, in central chief a fleur-de-lis Azure flanked beneath by a pine tree at dexter and an eucalyptus tree at sinister, both Sable leaved Vert. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "MELIDES".
Meaning:
The fleur-de-lis is an attribute of Our Lady of the Rosary, the local patron saint. The base wavy due to the green colour is representing the Atlantic.
