It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Shield Vert, issuant from base a mount Argent, crowned by an embattled castle Or, having one tower, flanked by two paly croziers Argent, each one carrying a scallop Or, in central chief a bunch of three corn cobs Or, leaved Aregent and tied Or. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "AIRÓ - BARCELOS".
Meaning:
Castle and mountain are representing the old castle on Mount Crasto in the Serra de Airó, they are also alluding to the former military importance of the place. The corn cobs are representing agriculture as predominant business line, especially the production of corn based products.
The scallops are alluding to St. James the Elder, and the croziers are alluding to the pilgrimage adoring St. Benedict.
