It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain blue background.

The coat of arms is argent, a castle azure under a pair of olive branches proper tied gules; in base a bridge sable over a wavy fess argent fimbriated azure. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE ALVITO".
The arms are either not canting, or only partly so, refering to the local Alvito river.

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Alvito municipality had 2500 inhabitants in 1990, and it is divided in 2 communes, covering 261 km². It belongs to the Beja District and to the old province of Baixo Alentejo.
