It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a blue and white quartered field.

The arms are Argent a base wavy Vert charged with two barrulets wavy Argent and a barrulet wavy Azure set along the edge of the base a ship Sable garnished Or with sails folded Gules and in chief a sun Gules and a crescent Azure. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "ESGUEIRA".

Esgueira Commune is one of the 10 communes of Aveiro Municipality (q.v.); it had 13 431 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 17,72 km². Esgueira was seat of a municipality from 1528 to 1801.
