Established as the hunting estate of Prince Dymitr Wiśniowiecki in 1522
on the land given to him by King Sigismund I the Old (Zygmunt Stary).
There is a significant minority of Lithuanians and Russian Old-Believers
in the commune.
Arms and flag adopted on September 2, 2005 (resolution # XXXVII/157/05).
"Arms - on a red field a white Red Deer standing to the right. In the
upper right corner a "gozdawa" (double lily).
Flag - red rectangle in the ratio 5:8 with a white horizontal band
of 3/5 of the width of the flag carrying the Arms in the middle."
