The Windward Islands include French Polynesia's biggest island, Tahiti, and, combined with its sister island of Moorea, have the biggest population of the territory. The 1996 census reported a total population of 219,521 for all of Tahiti & Her Islands (French Polynesia), with 162,686 people (74%) living in the Windward Islands. Tahiti's population at the time was 150,000.
The Windward Islands are made up of four islands and one atoll. The islands are Tahiti, Moorea, Maiao and Mehetia. The only atoll is Tetiaroa.
