image by António Martins, 25 March 2000In the War Memorial (Wellington), near the old museum
site, I saw, among other flags, what I can only describe
as a maroon ensign. It was identical to the NZ national
flag, only every part that would normally be blue (both
the fly and in the Union Jack), was a deep reddish purple.

I'd say it is a regular NZ flag left exposed to sunlight for too long -- but,
hey, it looks nice!
