The design depicts a navigational buoy or literally a "sailing grid" used to
signal directions for navigation within harbour.
Brønnøysund was a separate community until 1964 (and apparently after 200
again). It used an unapproved coat of arms adopted on 29 January 1923, see
here,
but [c2j87] shows the other, 1923 design including a
black border with four towers, the year 1923 and the town name in it, after a
drawing by Ole Andersen.
