The Kristiansund municipality includes a
page
on old Frei arms
including full quotation from [c2j87] and regulations for the use.
The design is meant to represent two royal links with Frei. The first is King
Haakon the Good who had a lodge in Bjerkestrand and had support by the Frei
people, including in the battle of Rastarkalv in 955. The second link is to King
Haakon VII who visited Frei in 1955 on occasion celebrating the millennium of the
battle - the largest event in municipality ever. In 1955 the municipality
started using an emblem (a badge) composed of a helm, crown, sword and a
cross-staff. When the arms were being prepared for approval in 198's, it was
only natural to choose one of the four elements from that badge, and choosing two
crowns Frei wanted to symbolise both past and present.
