On 1 January 2020 Ålesund Municipality merged with Haram Municipality, Skodje Municipality, Sandøy Municipality and Ørskog Municipality. On 1 January 2024 Haram Municipality left Ålesund Municipality and became a separate municipality again. During these mergers, Ålesund Municipality did not change its symbols.

Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms was approved by the royal resolution of 1 April 1898, drawn by Andreas Bloch (Norwegian painter, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreas_Bloch)
The Coat of Arms was adopted in connection of the city 50th anniversary, depicting fishery as the basis of the town's economy. The boat shown is a "fjøringfar" - a four pairs of oars boat, at one time the most important type of fishery boat. The boat illustration was inspired by the 1762 illustration of the fishery boat from Hans Strøms - the oldest fishery boat representation printed in Norway. See here.
Beneath the waves there are depicted three cods, the most important fish caught by these boats. At one point such cod was used a city police shield.
