Blazon: På grøn grunn ein sølv hestesko. In English: Vert a horseshoe argent.
Approved by the royal resolution of 20 January 1989
(In this part of the world, one would never put a horseshoe like this. As a symbol of luck, it is supposed, according to the popular belief, to have the opening upwards, so the luck would fall in and gather at the bottom of the shoe, and should not be opened downwards, for the luck to drop out... I guess that this symbolic is not known in Norway...)
The horseshoe symbolizes the most important domestic animals in a mountain town like this one. A working horse and transportation mean through both summer and winter, it also stands for good luck and happiness. Horseshoes, sure it is. But others believe that the shoe itself is lucky, and hanging it above a door with the hole at the bottom will let it spread its luck out over those who pass under it.
My horse shoe hangs as a gate, to welcome in good fortune and hopefully let bad fortune leave.
The keywords "horseshoe" and "horseshoes" have a total of 38 entries in FotW. Of these, 21 are gates/spreaders, and 16 are catchers, with 4 undecided
Hmm, are there other charges, lucky or otherwise, that have more than one traditional direction?
