Delt av blått og sølv ved gråverksnitt (med to spisser oppover). In English:
Per fess urdy azure and argent, two points to the chief.
Approved by the royal resolution of 24 may 1985 after a drawing by Ulf Skauge,
after an original idea by Nols Th. Finstad. [c2j87]
The design is inspired by two cairns (varde) located atop Helgøya /see photo
here). The cairns of this type were
used as navigational aids from pre-Christian times, and the two are the largest
in Norway. They are mentioned already in early 17th century texts, and according
the legend, they were erected by St. Olaf. A local tradition says they represent
two girls standing atop of the hill looking for their lovers to return from
fishing. They drowned and the girls remained waiting there. They are named "jentene
på Hellerøya" (girls from the Heller island). The original cairns were destroyed
by Germans in the WWII and afterwards they were rebuilt in concrete.
The design originally prepared by Finstad included tilted vertical sides of the
partition line, matching more properly the look of the ciarns, and the
municipality was using it since 1982. In more proper heraldrc representation of
undy line they were approved in 1985. See the old design used still like

having a more regular partition line, making "a turn" back up as approaching the
flanks, matching the shape in the centre).
