Blazon: På gull grunn tre blå fembladingar, 2-1. In English: Or three
cinquefoils azure.
Approved by the royal resolution of 13 December 1985 after a drawing by Bjørn
Arnesen after the idea by Ivar Aars. [c2j87]
and the last paragraph
here.
The flower in the design is called locally "Kristi blåe auga" - blue eyes of
Christ, but it is otherwise known in Norway as "snoøsøte" - snow gentian, also
known in English as Alpine gentian - with characteristic intense blue flowers.
([c2j87] mentions that "Kristi blå øye" is also
name for plant "tveskjeggveronika" - Veronica chamaedrys or germander speedwell,
but this was not meant to be represented [veronica seems to have four petals,
while gentian has five]. In this regard
Heraldry of
the World page seems to be wrong.)
The
municipal site also adds that the symbolism is of being open and positive -
as the gentian flowers which open only at sun and warmth. Also, the three
flowers stand for the three towns in the community: Fagernes, Leira and Aurdal.
