"Zijderveld is a village southeast of Vianen, at the border with Gelderland
province, in the former municipality of Everdingen - its largest village.
Mr. ter Steege, of the bureau of architects of the same name, designed
a flag and Coat of Arms for this village, at the end of last year (=1993). The Coat of Arms
consists of a golden cross; the first quarter shows on a green field a
church with spire of silver; the second quarter has three silver cloverleaves
placed 2,1 on a blue field. The third quarter has three silver waves, placed
below each other on blue; the fourth quarter has three silver cloverleaves
placed 2,1 on green.
The flag has the same pattern with a Scandinavian cross.
Symbolism: the cross signifies that the village is at cross-roads,
North-South Utrecht-Den Bosch; and the "Diefdijk" (dike of thieves)
which is part of the "Hollandse Waterlinie". These roads are represented
in gold/yellow.
The church has been drawn in silhouette to show it as a reconnaiscance
point.
The waves represent the threatening waves against the "Waterlinie".
The cloverleaves are for fertility - on blue for water, on green for
agriculture, mainly the tree-gardens.
The contrast of green and blue signifies the contrast of peace and
war.
In WWII this village was inundated and this is still fresh in the memories
of the old villagers, while youngsters are still worried about the high
levels the big rivers are now reaching (and the village is quite close
to Wilnis, a village inundated by low water)."
