Population (1 Jan 2003): 11.170; area: 30,00 km². Settlements: Schipluiden (seat), Den Hoorn, 't Woudt.
The municipalities of Maasland and Schipluiden merged on 1 Jan 2005 to form the new municipality of Midden-Delfland.
Schipluiden was first mentioned in 1083 as "Schipleda" in a charter of Count Dirk V. The municipality of Schipluiden was formed from the areas of seven lordships: Dorp, St. Maartensrecht, ‘t Woudt, Groeneveld, Hof van Delft, Hodenpijl and Zouteveen. All these had separate municipal councils consisting of Schout en Schepenen (sheriff and aldermen), responsible for civil affairs. For criminal affairs a bailiff was responsible, while a "polderbestuur" was in charge of water affairs. But the real power was in the hands of the "ambachtsheren" (manor lords).
Flagdescription: three equally wide horizontal stripes of blue and yellow. The blue color is lighter than in the historical flag.
