Capelle aan den IJssel municipality

Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 65.280; area: 15,40 km². Settlements: Capelle aan den IJssel (seat).
This municipality is an eastern suburb of Rotterdam, along the Hollandse IJssel. It has a very impressive "Stormvloedkering" (an installation only active in dangerous stormy conditions, to prevent flooding of the Green Heart of Holland).
It was a small fishing town in olden days, and that is symbolized (twice) on the flag. The flag was designed by Shipmate, and adopted 3 Nov 1980. The blue field refers to water of the Hollandse IJssel. In the hoist is the municipal Coat of Arms, and below it in black is written "Capelle aan den IJssel". The central emblem consists of two fishes, who form together a "C", and also a heart. These fishes are also the logo of the municipality.
The fishes on the Coat of Arms are "bermen" (groundlings?), an extinct type of fish, which occurred here in the past.

In 1938 Queen Wilhelmina had reigned for 40 years and there was a national parade in the Olympic stadium in Amsterdam. Capelle was represented there with the red over yellow provincial flag of Zuid-Holland, and afterwards the town used it for festive occasions, although it was never officially adopted.
