Hontenisse flagproposal (c.1970)

[Hontenisse flagproposal (c.1970)] by Jarig Bakker, 23 Oct 2004
proposal by Ir. A.J. Beenhakker (c.1970)

Hontenisse flagproposal: a green fruit-bearing orangetree in a white hoist-triangle reaching the fly on a blue field.
The orangetree is derived from the municipal arms and points at the possessions of the House of Orange in this region.
The white triangle symbolizes the sharp angle ("nisse") formed by the Honte river (=Westerschelde) at that place.
The (orange)-tree symbolizes the House of Orange; the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) represents the monastery at Kloosterzande, the seat of Hontenisse.
The dog is an attempt to make the arms canting: "hond" = dog.
Although this area was already inhabited in the 12th century it was continually devastated by inundations and French armies. The final blow came in 2003, when Hontenisse completely disappeared from the map by the merger with Hulst.
Note: the oranges on Coat of Arms and flagproposal are red (as well as on the new Coat of Arms).
