Adopted 31 Mar 1965
Beerta former municipality
Description: red with a yellow cloverleaf of 7/8 flagheight, on which a
red grill with handle of 1/2 flagheight.
Adopted 31 Mar 1965 by municipal resolution.

der Nederlanden", 2001.
The grill has been taken from the Coat of Arms (gold with St. Lawrence).
St. Lawrence is said to have been the patron saint of one of the monasteries
in Ulsda. Lawrence died as a martyr on a grill. After the monastery was
broken down the stone are said to have been transported to Beerta, where
they were used to build a church.
On 1 Jan 1992 Beerta became part of Reiderland. Beerta consisted of
the settlements Beerta (seat), Beersterhooge, Carel-Coenraadpolder, Drieborg,
Nieuw-Beerta, Nieuwe Statenzijl, Oudedijk, Oudezijl, Oude Statenzijl, Reiderwolderpolder,
Stadpolder, Ulsda, Winschoterzijl (part), and Zandhoogte.

Drieborg is a village in Groningen province, formerly in the municipality
of Beerta, now part of Reiderland in the eastern part of the province.
Stefan Lambrechts of Shipmate
just spotted a flagfoto at this
site. The flag was designed by "Vereniging Dorpsbelangen Drieborg"
(Society for Village Interests Drieborg). The background is formed by the
Groninger provincial flag. In the center
a yellow house with three pointed roofs with in black DRIEBORG.
The village is in Groningen, hence the Groninger flag.
The house with the three roofs, or three houses against each other,
or three "borgen" (manorhouses), symbolize the origin of the villagename.
There are several explanations for the origin of the name Drieborg,
but there were certainly never three "borgen" in Drieborg. One explanation
is that it was used ironically for a house with three doors, three chimneys,
in which three families lived.
Drieborg is only a few kilometers away from Germany, but the villagers
are more afraid of the furious waters of the Dollard (part of the Waddenzee)
and of their neighbours in "De Hongerige Wolf" (Hungry Wolf).
