adopted 29 Aug 1991.

Scheemda's old flag was: a square blue flag with in the center a sword
pointed downwards, with on each side a trowel pointing upwards.
Adopted 12 Jul 1966 by municipal resolution.
The flag is an adaptation of the former municipal arms, which are based
on the Biblical book Nehemia, 4: 17: The porters did their job with one
hand, and in the other hand held a javelin.
The Coat of Arms was granted 1661 to Nieuw Scheemda by Mayors and Aldermen of
the city of Groningen, because the church of Nieuw Scheemda separated
from the church of Scheemda in 1659. The new church was built with great
difficulty. This symbol of warhaft building was later adopted by the municipality
of Scheemda.
In 1990 the former municipalities of Midwolda, Nieuwolda and Scheemda
merged to form the new municipality of Scheemda, which adopted a new flag
and Coat of Arms.
