Arnhem flag

Arnhem is the capital of the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands, with c. 140.000 inhabitants.
The eagle on the flag is derived from the municipal Coat of Arms and may stand for the etymology: Arnhem = 'Arendsheim' (Eagles home). Adoption date: unknown.

Arnhem unofficial flag

[Arnhem new flag] image by Arnaud Leroy, 4 Feb 2005
Unofficial flag

Here is the new municipal flag of Arnhem, drawn by Arnaud Leroy after information he received from the municipality of
Arnhem.
The flag is horizontally divided yellow-blue with a white vertical stripe placed along the hoist; there are 31 red dots along the limit between the white stripe and the colour fields; a blue shield with a white double-headed eagle and surmounted with a blue crown is placed in lower hoist. Gemeente (Municipality, in small blue Capital letters) and Arnhem (in big green letters) is written in the rest of the white stripe. The file on which this image is based, was entitled "20030830 nieuwe vlag" (=new flag dated 30 September 2003).

Couldn't agree more. This is what happens when the advertising industry takes over vexillography. On the plus side, clearly identifying the enemy is the first step to defeating him  :-)
Albert S. Kirsch, 26 February 2005

It would be interesting to know why they (or anybody, for that matter) think it is necessary or appropriate to have the name of the municipality on the flag. For that, you could just as well skip the colours and other images and just fly white flags with names printed on them in black letters.
Elias Granquist, 28 February 2005

The new flag of Arnhem is: at the hoist the new municipal logo, and at the fly two horizontal stripes of *green* and blue.
G. Wouda (dept. of information of the municipality of Arnhem), 4 March 2005

I wrote to my contact at the Arnhem municipal office, and Anka Buunk (Concernmanager communications, municipality of Arnhem) replied:
"It is the (unofficial) logo-flag, which is flying daily in front of municipal buildings, taken into use in 2002, designed by "Total Identity" in Amsterdam. It has no symbolic meaning. However the "old" flag is still the official flag, used at the appropriate occasions".
The situation ain't as bad as it seemed...

Kronenburg cityward

[Kronenburg cityward flag] image by Eugene Ipavec, 24 November 2009

On 18 September 2009, "De Gelderlander" reports that the 22 boroughs of Arnhem will fly each a specific flag during the carnaval.
The photo attached to the article shows a few flags, which are rectangular banners to be displayed vertically.
Ivan Sache, 29 September 2009

To be more exact: For two weeks in November all 130 event-masts in Arnhem will display new borough-banners. The Carnaval-society "On-Ganse" invited 22 Arnhem artists to design banners for all 22 boroughs of the municipality, with their own symbols.
That is happening at the occasion of the 3rd Volunteersgala on 14 November. During the festive evening in Musis Sacrum (the Arnhem musical temple) a procession will be held, in which all flags will be shown to the public. Each borough has its own flag-carrier. The following Monday the banners will be hung at inroads and at several striking places in the center. After that "On-Ganse" will present the banners to the boroughs.

In "De Gelderlander" of Saturday a complete survey of all borough-banners. (Which never appeared...)
