Stefan Lambrechts discovered that c. 2004 a new model had been adopted: the old flag with the white image of the mermaid of the coat of arms. The new flag has been presented to the crew of the minesweeper "Makkum", as can be seen here.
Several villagers use it as the Frisian counterpart of the Flemish lion to be spotted at sports venues.

Makkum is a village in Wûnseradiel municipality in the province of Fryslân.
Flag: per hoistdiagonal yellow over green; at the hoist the narrowed municipal flag.

Arms: Azure a mermaid or, holding in her right hand a sailing boat argent, and in her left hand a lime-kiln argent.
The symbolism of this old Coat of Arms is that all prosperity for Makkum originates in the sea: fishing and chalk. The chalk-industry has disappeared, and fishing is disappearing gradually. According to Mr. Sierksma Makkum used to have another Coat of Arms: a deer statant. That is no longer in use.

This is no longer true: Makkumer pottery is prospering more than ever, and there are several wharfs for yachting boats - one is even producing ships for filthy rich people. The maid could afford a furcoat :-)

Nickname: "Strânjutters" - beachcombers
"Migen" - relatives (Dutch: "magen") - honorific name for people who value their relatives.
