Boazum village (Bozum)

Boazum (Dutch: Bozum) is a village in Littenseradiel; it used to be in the former municipality of Baarderadeel, with (1958) 557; (1974) 444 inhabitants. A silver chalice has been left from c. 1500 AD, with the inscription: "Dit is Bosum ram" - (This is the ram of Boazum). However this was not clear-cut. Some said that *ram* had to do with the measures in Boazum, which were far more generous than in the surroundings (ram. for "raming" = estimate.
Nickname: "kattekneppelers" put cat in barrel, throw heavy clubs against the barrel, until the barrel bursts and the cat escapes, throw club at cat and kill the cat, and here you are: the cat-king!
and: "skriezen" (gruttos - black-tailed godwits) - symbolizing the meadows and the meadow-birds, making a helluvalotofnoise)
Boazum coat of arms: in blue a turned silver ram, standing on a green meadow.
Flag: yellow with a blue lozenge reaching the rims of the flag; and on blue a white standing ram; the yellow fields divided diagonally towards the hoist, of which the to field is at 3/4 flag length till 1/4 flag length; at the flag top and -bottom at the hoist a green triangle.
The arms of Boazum is described in the Genealogysk Fierboekje of 1991, p. 185. We describe here the flag. The ram is on a blue lozenge. The lozenge is a symbol of law-administration, which can be found on the coat of arms of the Walta-family. They had a fortified house in Boazum. The field around the lozenge is yellow to designate the connection with the old "grietenij" (municipality) of Baarderadeel. The municipal colors are blue, gold and black.
The green triangles towards the hoist symbolize the old dikes built against the Middelzee in this region.
