Britswert village (Britswerd)

Britswert (Dutch: britswerd) is a village in Littenseradiel municipality, Fryslân; it used to be in the former municipality of Baarderadeel, with (1958) 154; (1974) 111 inhabitants. Virtually one village with Wiuwert. In the hamlet Kromwâl is a 350 years old shipyard, now specialized in yachts. In Kromwâl was also a "vermaning" - underground church - of the "menisten" (Baptists), which moved to Itens in 1863.
Nickname: "wetterpuollen" (water-puddles).
Britswert coat of arms: divided: I. red with in chief a golden anchor; II. blue with in chief a golden fleur-de-lis; in base a golden "terp" issuing from base, below it arched opened of the field and in this over all a golden clover.
Flag: two horizontal equally wide stripes of red and blue with over all a lying yellow anchor of which the shaft starts at 1/3 flag length and the point at 13/15 flag length, with a width of 1/10 flag height, and issuing from the anchor shaft over the imaginary lines of a hoist-triangle with the top at 1/3 flag length, in red a yellow clover and in blue a lily.
The Coat of Arms is divided in red and blue: red for the land and the shipping-industry at the Kromwâl; blue for the Britswerter Lake (made dry in 1855). The name of the village is represented in the bottom of the shield: brits = bridge, and "werd" = terp, mound. The arched opening also symbolizes the "meniste-vermaning" - the Baptist underground-church.
The clover in it refers to cattle-breeding and the meadows in the region. The fleur-de-lis refers to the lilies on the boards of the Britswerter Mar; the anchor belongs to the shipyard.
The flag is red and blue, like the coat of arms, with over all a combination of anchor, clover and lily.
