The coat of arms was designed by Sebastián Muro Guzmán; further information can be found in a book. Ornamentation surrounds the shield, and is held together by a scroll at the top. To the sides of the border and bottom, the motto "EDUCACION PROGRESO TRABAJO" is read. At the top, TEPETONGO is read. The upper-left section depicts a hand with a book for education and a cob of corn for agriculture. To the upper-right, a crossed pick and shovel for mining and head of cattle for cattle-raising. The lower section is shaped like a dome. In the lower section is an image of the local church San Juan Bautista and has a star on each side, remembering the faith.
