Coat of Arms

image from Wikimedia Commons

The coat of arms was adopted 1995 through a call for submissions from the council. Three submissions were received, with the coat of arms adopted as official being designed by Enrique Rodríguez Faz. At the top, the cross of Saint James for faith; over it is a ribbon reading DIGNITAS [dignity]. The border of the shield is shaped like a horseshoe, reading DEDICATIO [Dedication] to its left and PROSPERITAS [Prosperity] to the right. In the center of the shield, an image of a scene in a chiquihuite basket; with the Virgin Mary in front of mountains and behind a river, with a trail leading to her through the Valley; two Indians are seen, one kneeling down for the faith, and an arrow and sword are seen surrounding the people signifying the colonization of the area.

To the left (gray) on the mountain is a glyph representing Jalpa which means "in the sand"; to the right a traditional Decembrist "M". On top of the mountain is a Sanctuary. The right side, although barely visible on the image, is shaped like an eagle; the area was known by the Caxcán Indians as "Nest of Eagles". At the bottom of the scene is the year 1542, its establishment. Surrounding the basket is a sickle, both works Jalpa is known for, with two handles; at the top of it is the word LABOR. Above the sickle is a cogwheel for work bearing the sun and having its rays extend out. To the sides of the shield are ribbons, and at the bottom leaves.
