The coat of arms was adopted in 1992, being designed by Juan José Muñoz Bañuelos, alumnus of the Normal Experimental School "Salvador Varela Reséndiz". Above the shield is the dome of the Saint Francis of Assisi Church. Wrapping around the shield is a green ribbon, reading at the bottom "1542 y 1992"; its foundation and the adoption of its coat of arms, respectively. At the bottom of the shield is its name in a small ribbon. The shield bears an inescutcheon, depicting the Municipal Building and its 27 September Market. A small section is created in the upper-right, depicting Tenamaxtle by a tree remembering his escape after the loss of the Mixtón War. To the right, the cultivation of corn and beans, along with cane sugar. To the left, Caxcán Indians falling down a cliff after they lost the Mixtón War, preferring death over becoming Spanish slaves. To the lower-left, Tastuan ritual dancers signifying the festivities of Saint James the Apostle on 25 July. The background is filled with hills, mountains, sand and the sky above.
