Coat of Arms

from Wikimedia Commons

The coat of arms of Tampico was adopted through Decree N°82 on 24 November 1828, being conceded by the State Government under the administration of Lucas Fernández. The description was confirmed on 27 March 1973 with the intervention of Governor Manuel A. Ravizé to make sure the original coat of arms would be restored. As the Tampico Chamber of Tourism wrote at the time:

In its colors a river in which an Indian navigates in a canoe representing the primitive inhabitants of the region; on the nearby shore appears two water dogs or otters which abound in the rivers and lagoons of this site and on the opposite shore low hills and two groups of palm trees representing the vegetation of the place; in the axis of the shield a silver star of five points representing hope. Bordered in blue with gold letters and with the legend Tampico. In actuality red is often placed in the border and with white letters Tampico.

Note that although this description says water dogs or otters, these are actually supposed to be regular dogs. The name Tampico means "place of dogs", being the reason their inclusion on the coat of arms.
