Coat of Arms

from Wikimedia Commons

The coat of arms of San Nicolás was adopted in 1982, being designed by the teacher Salvador González Figueroa, a recognized artist and graphic designer. The municipal government at the time opened a call for people to design a coat of arms, with Salvador being asked to carry out and present the design.

The coat of arms of San Nicolás has a golden border with rolled edges, similar to the coat of arms of the State. The inner area is divided in half horizontally and the upper half is divided into three sections. The lower half depicts a scene with the mountains and clouds in the background; in front, a tree (in older versions a yucca plant), cow, 2 goats, and grass (in older versions agave) signifying the cattle-raising industry. The upper-left section depicts a cave with two crossed picks and a shovel in front of it; in front of this is a miner's hat, clearly remembering the mining industry. The upper-center section depicts a church building in front of a mountain and by grass, remembering the San Nicolás Tolentino Mission. The upper-right section depicts corn plants on the ground, alluding to agricultural wealth. Apparently, there is a sword on the coat of arms for defense of the municipality and justice, but not on newer versions.
