Tekax is a city since December 4, 1841. It is located in a valley between the mounts La Sierrita, south of Yucatán with a altitude average 34 meters over the sea leverl. The municipality has an area of 3,773 square kilometers, then the 8.78% of the State's territory. It is the second in size. The population is mainly dedicated to agriculture, livestoock, commerce, tourism, and services.

When the town of Tekax became a village in 1823, it was granted a flag, which was first hoisted the October-28 morning. At the time Tekax was one of the five constituent Yucatán districts.
In 1841, Tekax is declared a city.

The present-day Tekax coat of arms was adopted on December 4, 1991, date when is celebrated the 150th aniversary since Tekax was declared a city.
The coat of arms consits on a Spanish field parted by band into three quarters.
The symbolical figures appear in the quarters refer three aspects of Tekax: its "Santo guardián", its natural resources, and its Mayan toponic.
The temple in or on azur over a siple mountain is for San Dieguito, Franciscan Fra canonized by Pope Sixtus V on July 2, 1568. This temple was build up in 1645.
In the second band five stylized sugar canes in sinople on silver are represented since thanks the growing of this plant Tekax was granted the Town and City degrees. The Mayan toponimic "Tekax" means, among other meanings, "forest,mountain, agricultural place". This meaning is represented in the third band.The tres are in sinople on or.
Bellow all, a white scroll with the city's name in azur.
