Daniel Gámez Enríquez as Municipal President, in coordination with the historian Antonio Nakayama, designed the municipal coat of arms and had it adopted officially 26 July 1962. The shield has a red bordure, reading the initials "MS" and "MC" on its left and righthand sides, respectively. It is divided into four quadrants. In the upper-left is the image of a petate, referencing the original name of the Sinaloa River and region (Petatlán, meaning place of the petates). The upper-right depicts the tower of the church of San Felipe de Santiago, established 1635, also referencing the foundation of the population in 1853.
Note: I actually couldn't find the meaning of the initials, a bit surprised. The third section depicts a star on the northwestern region, bordering the Pacific. The fourth section depicts a hand holding a torch for the Revolution, especially referencing Gabriel Leyva Solano. The shackle on the hand is open, representing the liberation of the peoples from oppression. Serving as a crest to the coat of arms is the National Coat of Arms, symbol of the nationality. Below is a ribbon reading "Villa de Sn. Phelipe y Santiago de Sinaloa", the original name of the region.
