The council expedited Decree N°13 on 19 December 1997, in effect on 13 March 1998, which adopted the official coat of arms of the municipality. It was designed by Rolando Arjona Amábilis, who also designed the state coat of arms. The shield has a yellow border, reading COSALÁ at the top with the A's in red and its year of foundation, 1562 at the bottom; a parrot feather is found on each side, for the fauna. As for the inner section: in the upper-left, on a red field, is the coat of arms of the state in gold with the initials Don F.I.C. for Don Francisco Iriarte Conde, father of the state. In the upper-right, on blue, a profile view of the tower and cupula of the Santa Úrsula church is seen; above, 11.000 is a reminder of the legend that Saint Ursula was martyred with 11,000 virgins. The lower half is black, bearing a radiant sun with 16 alternating rays, charged with a pick and shovel for mining. The numbers appear to be for elements: 3 (Lithium), 6 (Carbon), 9 (Fluorine), 12 (Magnesium). The C below is for Cosalá. The form below is a pre-Hispanic representation of water, specifically representing the Elota and San Lorenzo rivers. Serving as a crest is a paper with the name of the newspaper El Espectador Imparcial on fire.
