As found online (blog post of the Municipal Chronicler), the coat of arms was adopted during the Administration of Municipal President Amado Olguín García (1980-1982). It was originally adopted through a contest at the Center for Technical and Agricultural Studies in the Delegation of Agua Buena, in which the design by Juan José de Jesús Moreno Ortiz emerged as the winning design. He used the "Agua Buena" sugar mill chimney on his design, representative of his area, but it was modified to represent the Municipal Seat better. The nurse José Benito Martínez Rodriguez, collaborating with the Municipal President, took features from other student works such as its waterfall.
The shield has, to its sides, a hand holding a machete (left) and sugarcane plant (right) signifying the importance of agriculture. Under the shield is a blue ribbon that reads "MPIO. DE TAMASOPO", having on its ends (left) a corn plant and (right) olive branch of peace. Above the shield is a cogwheel for the working class. The shield is divided into three sections, with two above and one big one at the bottom. The upper-left section depicts the Tamasopo waterfalls, which highlights tourism. The upper-right section depicts two crossed arms, one holding a wrench and the other a machete; under them is the motto "LIBERTAD Y PROGRESO" [Liberty and Progress]. The lower section depicts a tractor plowing a field, highlighting the fertile land of the Municipality.
