The council informed me the process of the adoption of their coat of arms started on 15 August 1942, done for the 400th anniversary of the municipality. It was designed by Prof. Rodolfo Díaz de León; the idea of its adoption was from the municipal president of the time, J. Jesús C. Flores (1941-1943), who asked an artistic commission headed by Díaz de León. It was adopted on 12 December 1942 as official by the council in a session. The shield has a golden frame, with scrolled edges at the top and a triangle reading "FUNDACION 15 DE AGOSTO 1542" [FOUNDATION 15 AUGUST 1542]. The inner area has at the bottom a golden disc that reads 1942, year of the adoption of the coat of arms. In the center, Juan de Santa María is depicted holding his hat and a pickaxe; he was the chief who founded the town, emerging from behind the mountains (Cerro de El Original). In front of him, a bridge is found over water from the 19th century, symbol of its architecture. To the left, the church of Santa María de la Asunción is briefly seen; to the right, white flowers are seen for its flora. In the middle, a forest is seen which at one point was the source of its wealth. A robe frames this signifying its artisanry.
