The municipal chronicler informed me they do not know the history of the municipal coat of arms. Above the shield, an eagle is seen with its wings spread out, signifying the strength of the town. The border depicts a National Tricolor band at the top, for patriotism. At the bottom, "SAN MARTÍN CHALCHICUAUTLA" is read (in some versions). The shield is divided into five sections: two smaller ones at the bottom, a big section in the upper-left, and two smaller ones in the upper-right. The upper-left section depicts San Martín of Tours on horseback with a soldier's attire giving assistance to an elderly man; he is the patron saint of the Municipality. The upper-right sections depict: (above) sugarcane for its processing to create piloncillo as part of the local economy; and (below) a tree bearing fruits, representative of its name "Chalchicuautla" which means "place of emerald trees". The lower-left section depicts the Municipal Building. Finally, the lower-right section depicts a cow for its cattle-raising industry.
