The council informed me they could not find the history regarding its coat of arms in the municipal archive. The coat of arms has a similar form to the coat of arms of the state, having at the top the effigy of Sebastián de Villegas Cumplido, the founder of Linares. At the bottom is a ribbon in the national colors reading AMPAPA CAEGNE AMIGUAS [Indians that gather red ochre and eat fish], the name of a band that lived here. The border reads CIUDAD D SAN PHELIPE D LINARES, the old name, at the bottom; to the sides, CVLTVRA NOBLEZA Y TRADICION [Culture, Nobility, and Tradition].
The upper-left section of the shield depicts a petroglyph with paintings. The upper-right section depicts a representation of an Ampapacaegeneamiguas Indian, believed to have inhabited the region. The lower-left section depicts the temple of San Felipe Apóstol. The lower-right section depicts a saltire, with a crowned red rampant lion at the bottom and fort above; this is a representation of the coat of arms of Fernando de Alencastre, 35th Viceroy of New Spain; the Villa was established here in his honor. Finally, in the center is an inescutcheon, depicting a red galero with tassels, the shield having a red cross, quartered in white and purple; between the hat and shield is the year 1712, being a representation of the coat of arms of Sebastián de Villegas Cumplido.
