The coat of arms was adopted through a public contest, being designed by Herminia de Canales in 1984. Originally, walnut branches surrounded it; the versions used today do not have this, and have not been approved officially by the State or Municipality. The coat of arms has the same form as the coat of arms of the State, having at the top a helmet and below a ribbon in the National Colors reading BUSTAMANTE, N.L. To the sides of the border are SAN MIGUEL DE AGUAYO; at the bottom 1686, its foundation, and 1832, when it became a Villa. At the top of the border is a tower (left) and Eucharist (right), representing the colonization. Golden coins can be seen in between these. It is believed the municipality used to have another coat of arms, as descriptions of the coat of arms online are different from the actual image. The shield is divided into four sections, having an inescutcheon in the center. The upper-left section depicts the Gomas Mountains; the upper-right a red crowned rampant lion, symbol of the State. The lower-left section depicts the temple of San Miguel Arcángel, and in the lower-right stalactites and stalagmites of a cavern, representing the Grutas del Palomito, or the Grutas de Bustamante. The inescutcheon in the center depicts an old hieroglyph of Tlaxcala; it is two hands above hills, together holding a tortilla, the meaning of the name of Tlaxcala, remembering its foundation by the Tlaxcalans.
