The coat of arms of Silao was created in the 1940's by Alfredo Rodríguez Contreras, but because of economic difficulties it was not made in actual form; Manuel O. Romero took the duty of painting it and refined the details between 1945 and 1953, when the Silao coat of arms finally became known. Over the shield is a helmet with blue and red feathers emerging from it. Under the shield is decoration with a shell shape as symbol of Santiago the Apostle reading "SILAO"; within this are ears of wheat for agriculture and the abundance of plains in the area. The border reads the motto "OMNIA VINCIT LABOR" [work conquers all]. The inner area is divided into four sections. The upper-left section depicts an image of Santiago the Apostle on horseback carrying a flag in war, reference to the fight of the Spaniards against Arabs, where he appeared to help the Spanish win the battle; he is also the patron saint of the Municipality. The upper-right section depicts three smoke shapes, representing the thermal waters of Aguas Buenas and Comanjilla; in the background are mountains. The lower-left section depicts the first hermitage of Silao, referencing its foundation. The lower-right section depicts three corn plants in front of a mountain, symbol of the principal agricultural production of Silao.
