Coat of Arms

from Facebook

On 28 September 1953, with the motive of the bicentenary of the birth of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla a few months before, on the second centenary of the capture of Alhóndiga de Granaditas in the city of Guanajuato a civic ceremony displayed a gallery of heraldic coats of arms of each one of the States of the Republic. Municipalities were also invited, but few participated. Municipal President José López Bermúdez asked for the oil painting of a municipal coat of arms, which was designed by a painter from Michoacán named Guillermo Sánchez, who followed a design suggested by Friar Fulgencio Villagómez and Juan Jiménez V. He also followed the proportions 80 x 60 cm, required by the state event-organizing commission, which also asked that the frame for the painting be made by Casa Morett in Mexico City. Description of the coat of arms:

The shield is divided into four sections, divided by ribbons of gold. In the upper-left section, it is represented by the image of the Señor de Esquipulas, Patron Saint of Moroleón. To the right, a village scene, which represents the hamlet of the first populators which established themselves in these lands, to the margin the royal path that connected to Valladolid (today Morelia) with various cities of the State. In the lower-left section; a caduceus, attribute of the Greek god Hermes, who symbolizes commerce. And, to a side, a weaver, which symbolizes the local textile industry which has given life and progress to Moroleón. [The shield also has mantling and multiple X shapes in the border.]
