Coat of Arms

from Facebook

The coat of arms was adopted during the term of Municipal President C. Raúl A. Patiño Franco (1986-1988). He asked the chronicler of the city, Gustavo Ruiz Ballesteros, who then held a contest with various participants, with the design accepted being created by the Engineer José Vega Solis. The shield is placed over parchment, denoting the old age of the city. At the top, a ribbon reads "JARAL DEL PROGRESO"; at the bottom, "21 DE AGOSTO DE 1819", the date of the first rural chapel's creation. Two branches of flowers are placed under the shield, signifying the word "jara" as part of its name. Two cords stretch from the sides, and two small ones above; these recognize the Augustinians of the colonial era.

In the center, a shield is placed that reads, in its border, the motto "CONSENSUS ET LABOR PROGRESSUM GENERANT" [Union and work make progress, in Latin.] The shield is divided into four sections, with one at the top, two in the center, and a triangle at the bottom. The upper section depicts the sun over the Cerro de Culiacán hill, a view seen from the city. The central-left section depicts a cow and two ears, one of wheat and the other of sorghum for cattle-raising and agriculture as industries. The center-right section depicts a bridge creating an artificial waterfall, with the date "11 DE OCTUBRE DE 1810" above, recognizing that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla passed through this place on that day; he was invited to the house of Manuel Muñatones. The lower section depicts a tractor over a ploughed field, signifying the hardworking people of the place.
