No Flag

It appears Motozintla does not use a municipal flag.

Coat of Arms

image from the Municipal Council

The coat of arms of Motozintla was adopted on 12 November 1987, being made official by a decree under the term of Municipal President Rodolfo Plinio Escobar Sandoval (1986-1988). After discussion between William de León Herrera; his father, Flavio de León Camas; and Víctor Manuel Mijares García, the coat of arms was carved into wood by William de León Herrera and presented to the public for the first time in November 1961 at the local primary school "Ilhuicamina", now the secondary school "Diurna del Estado Motozintla". Since the time, some administrations have added squirrels and vultures but the coat of arms continues being the same as the original.

The shield is divided into two sections, having a V shape for its upper section. The upper section depicts the Male Hill, considered as the guardian of the city; while the lower section depicts a tree carrying copal (a type of resin) recognizing the historic Maya pilgrimages to the area for the product, with a squirrel to its left eating an acorn, signifying its name as meaning "hillside of the squirrels", and a cornucopia to its right with coffee seeds for its economy. Serving as a background to the lower half is the texture of petate, a bedroll commonly used mostly in the past. Under the shield, a ribbon reads "MOTOZINTLA".

The petate was added during its creation as wood. A bush was originally proposed for the coat of arms by Víctor Manuel for the coffee seeds, but Flavio de León decided it would be better in a cornucopia. Also, it was originally decided that it would be divided into four sections but William proposed changing it into two.
