The coat of arms of Matamoros was adopted during the term of Municipal President Jesús Ríos Rueda (1985-1987). It was adopted by petition of the municipal president, asking Eduardo López and Humberto Luna to design it; it appears the main author, however, was Manuel Muñoz Olivares. The coat of arms has a scrolled outer border, having in its main border Matamoros at the top and 1842 at the bottom, the year of its foundation. The upper-left depicts the gazebo in the main plaza and La Cueva del Tabaco, where the archives of the Nation were hidden by Benito Juárez. The upper-right depicts the Our Lady of the Refuge church and a wagon, remembering the pioneers that transited through the area. In the lower section, an image of a valley with a canal cutting across, mountains in the background. At the front is a stack of cotton, grapes, watermelon (one whole and one sliced piece), corn plant, turnip, carrot, and wheelbarrow; representing its agricultural economy.
