L-Imdina was the ancient capital of Malta.

The Rabat municipality on Malta island is the suburb of
L-Imdina. I believe Rabat means suburb, while L-Imdina (pronounced imdina, but cognate of Medina) is a walled city.

In French médina is used as follows, from Petit Larousse Illustré:
médina (from Arabic madina): Old city - as opposed to the modern European new city - in the Arab countries, mostly in Morocco.I believed most traditional cities in Morocco were fortified, so your translation as "walled city" might be appropriate.

I spotted the city flag of L-Imdina in November 2000. It was its banner-of-arms
- proportions 3:5, as near as I can tell - the old undefaced white-red vertical bicolor.
