Élan populaire pour l'Unité Nationale  (Vonjy)

[Vonjy flag] image by Rob Raeside, 30 Jun 2004

Another image in the intermittent series on maps on flags provided by Mason Kaye. This is the flag of the Popular Impulse for National Unity.  The image was supplied as sketch, but the information adds "Map is red with black outline, red background".  The Popular Impulse for National Unity (Élan populaire pour l'Unité Nationale / Vonjy Iray Tsy Mivaky - VITM or Vonjy) is a centrist, Catholic-oriented group, formed in 1973 by followers of former president Philibert Tsirinana.

Highwall of the Democracy of Madagascar (MDM)

[MDM party flag] image by Mason Kaye, 02 Mar 2004

This is the flag of Highwall of the Democracy of Madagascar - on a white background is a blue map.  One either side of the map is the letter M in blue, and on top of the map is a white D.  To the NW and SE of the map are nine blue stars.

I can't find anything on this, for instance the French (or Malagasy) name. In Google, MDM is present in Madagascar as Médécins du Monde (6 hits).  I wonder if Highwall of the Democracy of Madagascar translates as Mur haut de Démocratie de Madagascar?

Monima Kamivimbio Union

[Monima Kamivimbio Union] image by Rob Raeside, 08 Jun 2004

Mason Kaye provided a pencil sketch, outline in black on white of the flag of the Monima Kamivimbio Union, but a note saying "map is red".  I am guessing so are the stars and letters, so I have coloured them thus.

Mpiasa Sy Tantsaha Mitolona (M.T.M)

[Military, Workers, & Peasants of Madagascar] image by Mason Kaye, 08 Jun 2004

On a horizontal bi-bar of green and yellow is a white map of Madagascar with two red shovels and a red star.  On the top half are the words MPIASA SY TANTSAHA MITOLONA M.T.M. (translated as Military, Workers, & Peasants of Madagascar) in white.

Mpitolona ho amin'ny Fanjakan'ny Madinika (MFM)

[MFM party flag] image by Ivan Sache, 07 Feb 2001

MFM is 'Mpitolona ho amin'ny Fanjakan'ny Madinika' (Activists for Madagascar Progress).
The movement website says: 'MFM is not a child prodigy born during the national uprising of May 1972.  Its creation was the outcome of a harsh fight which had started in 1966 in several clandestine and official organizations, which then involved academics and former nationalist activists but also workers and farmers. Manadafy and his fellows presented the MFM in that way in their review 'Tselatra-Eclair'.

The 1972 uprising ended with the resignation of president Philibert Tsiranana, who had been ruling over the country since 1956 (first as president of the autonomous republic and from 1958 onwards as president of the independent republic).

The flag shows a black figure raising the hand on a red background. From the pictures shown on the 'album photo' section of the website, it seems to be widely used, along with plain red flags (or maybe the red flags are the reverse of the movement flag. Knowing the disastrous economic situation of the so-called 'Large Island', I guess the flags are home-made by stenciling the symbol on a piece of red fabric.

I have used the party emblem from the website as a template to 'stencil' a reconstruction of the flag shown above.

Parti Démocrate Chrétien de Madagascar (UDECMA)

[UDECMA party flag] image by Jarig Bakker, 20 Nov 2003

Image of the flag of the Malagasy Christian Democratic Union, provided to Mason Kaye by Michel Lupant.  Mason notes "Map is red, background is white".
Rob Raeside, 20 Nov 2003

French name: Union Démocratique Chrétien Malgache (UDECMA), formerly known as Rassemblement National Malgache (RNM). In 1990 the party was reported to be competing with the MDCM (Mouvement des Démocrates Chrétiens de Malgaches - Movement of Christian-Democrats of Madagascar), and PDCM (Parti Démocrate Chrétien de Madagascar - Christian Democrat Party of Madagascar) for recognition as Madagascar's affiliate of the Christian Democratic International.

Rassemblement pour le Socialism et la Démocratie (RPSD)

[RPSD party flag] image by Michel Lupant, 05 Dec 2003

Continuing the maps-on-flags series from Mason Kaye, the Gathering (Union) for Social Democracy.  No further information, except that the source is Michel Lupant.
Rob Raeside, 05 Dec 2003

The "Rally for Socialism and Democracy" (Rassemblement pour le Socialism et la Démocratie - RPSD), the incarnation of the Social Democratic Party (Parti Social Démocrate - PSD), that was legalized in 1990 as a revival of the party originally formed in 1957 by Philibert Tsirinana and is still frequently referenced under the earlier rubric. In 1997 it was led by Pierre Tsirinana, son of Philibert. On 15 Dec 2002 the RPSD got 11 seats in the national house of representatives.

Young People's Party

[YPP flag] image by Rob Raeside, 30 Jun 2004

Another image in the intermittent series on maps on flags provided by Mason Kaye. This is the flag of the Party of the Young Peoples, Madagascar. Map was provided as a pencil sketch, and the notation "Map is red on white". I am guessing so are the letters.
