To quote the Lithuanian Heraldry Commission on Facebook, "The coat of arms symbolizes the legend of the drowned bell of the Skapiškis church and the church of St. Lawrence, which has not survived, and the feast of St. Lawrence which is still held in the town. The silver colour represents water, and the red colour represents the past struggles for freedom." The designer of the symbols is Rolandas Rimkūnas, the coat of arms being approved by presidential decree on September 26, 2023.
