Located in Otaru City Hokkaido and established in 1949. The flag has crimson background charged with white university emblem in the center. The university emblem was adopted on October 1, 1998. The emblem "A Star on the Wings of Hermes" represents a star on the wings of Hermes, the god of commerce, shining forth the light of wisdom from the land of the north. The ribbon below shows the founding year 1910 and the initials Otaru University of Commerce. Hermes is one of the Greek mythological deities, the god of messengers, commerce, and scholarship. In Roman mythology, he was called Mercury. Hermes has a winged staff with two serpents entwined around it and flies around the world as a messenger god. Since the Otaru High School of Commerce, the predecessor of the university, the "One star" has been used as the symbol of the school. There is a star in the north. Small in stature, but strong in brightness. The star symbolizes the tradition of the university. The kanji letters 商大" (University of Commerce) are placed below the star.
