Located in Kyoto City Kyoto Prefecture and established in 1922.
The embroidered ceremonial flag has dark red background with a gold emblem and gold fringe. A plain university flag is also used on campus.
The school emblem consists of the Chinese character 大 for "large" stamped in seal script in the center and surrounded by six peony leaves in a stylized design. This emblem began to be used in 1901, the year the university's predecessor, Shinshu Otani University, moved to Sugamo, Tokyo, and opened a modern university. The front and back emblems are used differently depending on where they are used.
