After the battle of Okehazama in 1560, he formed an alliance with Oda Nobunaga and destroyed the Takeda clan. After Nobunaga's death at Honnoji, he became one of the Five Senior Grand Councilors, with possession of Mikawa, Totomi, Suruga, Kai, and Shinano provinces. He defeated Toyotomi's forces at the Battle of Sekigahara, and Battles of Osaka opened the Edo shogunate, and became Shogun. He won the Osaka Winter Campaign and the Osaka Summer Campaign in 1615 and unified the country. The war banner has white background with three Tokugawa’s family emblems of hollyhock in black topped with a white Maneki small streaming flag. It is said that Ieyasu chose the hollyhock emblem, which is considered a sacred plant and has been used as the sacred emblem of Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto, as his family emblem because he wanted to prove the dignity of the samurai Genji (Minamoto)clan as a descendant of Kamigamo Shrine, which is descended from the Genji(Minamoto) clan. He also used a streaming banner with the Jodo sect's sutra, "厭離穢土欣求浄土" in black written on a white background. Tokugawa Ieyasu used the "hollyhock flag" until around the time of the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute in 1584, after which he changed it to an all-white flag, that is, a flag with no emblem on a white background. It is thought to have followed the white flag with no emblem of Minamoto no Yoritomo, who was the leader of the Genji clan and stood at the top of the warrior class.
