Aizu Domain ensign

Located at Fukushima Prefecture. Last lord's name: Matsudaira Katamori. They
used white field charged with black Chinese character Ai of Aizu in the center
as domain's army flag and naval ensign.

"Aizu" means "signal" doesn't it? But it's not that word, I assume.
The flag is a 5:4 high flag. Since you told us army flags were high flags and
ensigns were horizontal, I assume the version you sent is only for the army.
I leave it to the readers of Japanese to say whether I got the character right,
as I don't know how much variation would be acceptable.

In this case Aizu is place name.會津 and signal is 合図. The character reads well.
It is acceptable.

They also used white field charged with black Aizu hollyhock in the center which
is looks more similar to nuphar. Shogunate branch family used a variation of
Tokugawa hollyhock crest.
